Ry, in Spring Valley township, western part of Fillmore county, 16 miles from Preston, the county seat, and 130 miles by rail from St. Paul. Contains a flouring mill, and an agricultural implement manufactory and foundry, all operated by steam. Churches – Congregationalist, Baptist and Methodist. Has 2 graded schools, a newspaper – the Western Progress – a bank, public library and 3 hotels. Exports, flour, wheat and cereals. Express, American. Telegraph, Northwestern. It has a manufactory, turning out school and office furniture, a foundry, 5 churches, Congregational, Baptist, Methodist, Wesleyan and Catholic, a graded school of 7 departments, a weekly newspaper, the Vidette (Republican), a bank, a public library, 3 hotels and 6 elevators, with a combined capacity of 50,000 bushels. Exports, wheat, flour, hogs and general country produce. Land in the vicinity is worth from $15 to $30 per acre. Express, Am. Telegraph, Southern Minnesota, at the depot.
