The State of Minnesota built many institutions over the years, including a capitol, prisons, normal schools, and orphanages. There are interesting stories behind the competition to obtain these state “trophies.”  They were required to use local materials as much as possible. Therefore, local Minnesota brick was often used in their construction. Huge numbers of brick were required for these buildings, because they were so large, elaborate, and beautifully designed.
