Herman Matthei, a native of Prussia, was born November 22, 1833. In 1856 he came to Wisconsin and two years later made a trip to Pike’s Peak. Visited various cities, and while coming north from New Orleans was detained for a time as a prisoner by the rebels. He came to Henderson in 1863; was foreman of a brickyard at Minneapolis and then started a brickyard at Henderson. Married in 1867 Miss Hoskorden, and has four children living.
