PASSES BEYOND WHILE ASLEEP
Henry E. Howe Resident of This Community Attains Age of Over 80 Years.
Henry E. Howe, resident of this immediate locality for over 53 years, passed away at his home in this city at some hour during Sunday night at the advance age of 80 years, 6 months and 22 days. Death came mercifully upon this aged citizen while he slept, his demise being discovered by his life help-mate, who shared the same bed with him, when she arose at the customary hour about 7 o'clock. She suffered a severe shock when she put a kindly hand on his forehead upon noting the pallor of his face and discovered life had passed beyond. A week before he had a slight touch of the flu, but was apparently enjoying good health when the aged couple sang their favorite hymns together, as they were accustomed to do, before retiring for the night.
The late Henry E. Howe was born July 25, 1849, in Jamaica, Vermont; his parents being Lucius and Clara (Higgins) Howe. The family came west to Chaska in 1856. Mr. Howe who was a boy received his education in the schools of Carver county and grew to manhood there, and was employed at brickmaking. He was united in marriage with Caroline Schmidt at Chaska on Nov. 16, 1871, who survives him.
Eleven children was the issue of this union, all of whom are living; they are Mrs. (Emily) T. J. Hawthorne, of Chicago, Ill.; Emory P., of this community; Herbert H., of Maywood, Ill.; Mrs. (Florence) C. R. Dice, of Detroit, Mich.,; Eldie and Francis, of this community; Henry of Stewart; Elmer, of Hutchinson; Walter, of Lucca, N. D.; Milton, of Stewart; Sheldon R., of Chaska. He also leaves 32 grandchildren.
The late Mr. Howe was the last surviving member of a family of fifteen children. He was a man who spent a most active life until attaining advanced age, and was a successful farmer. He came to McLeod county 53 years ago and located on a farm situated one mile northwest of Glencoe, where he lived until 10 years ago when he retired and established a residence in Glencoe to enjoy with his wife the fruits of their labors during their remaining years of life. Mr. Howe served as treasurer of School District No. 65 for several years, and he was one of the farmers who were active in the founding of the Glencoe creamery and served as its secretary for a number of years. He was a member of the Maccabee lodge.
Eight years ago Mr. Howe and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary surrounded by members of their family which was the most significant event of their declining years.
Funeral services will take place at the Congregational church in this city at 1:30 o'clock this afternoon, and interment will be made in the Glencoe cemetery. Rev. J. G. Morgan will officiate. The deceased led an exemplary life and was a highly respected citizen. He and his wife were Godfearing people, and Rev. Morgan will take as the theme for the funeral sermon, one which Mr. Howe had suggested some time ago that he would like to have selected.
The community sympathizes with the sorrowing widow and children in the loss they have sustained. - Glencoe Enterprise.
