Fred Aufderheide, well-known manufacturer of brick and tile, one time president of both the Farmers & Merchants State Bank and the State Bank of New Ulm, and one of the most enterprising business men in this section of the state, passed away at his home in this city Tuesday morning at 4:30 o’clock after a prolonged illness extending over a period of six or seven years. Kidney trouble caused his death.
Born in Germany
The deceased was a native of Germany, having been born near the town of Langerich, in Westphalia, December 8, 1853. When he was seventeen years of age, Mr. Aufderheide came to the United States and located in Cincinnati, where he completed his training in brick-making. It was in 1875 that he came to Minnesota and located in this city, where he started a brick yard near the Armin Mack farm in Milford township. One year later Mr. Aufderheide purchased the Winkelmann property in the southern part of this city and moved to that property where he has continued to work, establishing his residence and business plant there. In his endeavors he has been very successful. Starting with a small plant the business has increased and the plant was developed to extensive proportions and has long been recognized as one of the leading brick and tile factories in this section of the state.
Mr. Aufderheide was united in marriage with Miss Eliza Schapekahm in this city May 25, 1881. To this union five children were born. William, the oldest son died at the age of seventeen years. Those who remain with their mother to mourn the passing are: Emma, now Mrs. Arthur Boock, Carl and Herman, and Hertha, Mrs. George Gieseke, Jr., all of whom reside in this city. One brother, Ernest Aufderheide, of Lamberton, and nine grandchildren also survive.
Entered Banking Business
In the late years, Mr. Aufderheide has been associated in business with his two sons and he has had more time to indulge in other lines of business activity. He was president of the State Bank of this city from January 3, 1911 until February 5, 1912. He is still interested in the institution, however. In 1914 he aided in the organization of the Farmers and Merchants State Bank of New Ulm with a

During his position as head of the institution he gained a high position in financial and banking circles and was well known over this part of the state.
Owned Farm Land
In addition to looking after his business interests, Mr. Aufderheide had always taken a keen interest in the development of New Ulm. He held extensive land holdings and was recognized as one of the most substantial citizens in this community, owning farms in both Brown and Murray counties.
Mr. and Mrs. Aufderheide and their family are members of the Lutheran Church and the family has always taken an active part in the general, social and cultural activities of New Ulm.
